Operating Procedure of the Diamond Drill Bit
1. Hole preparation
Put the prior bit with a junk basket into the well
Check the wear condition of the previous drill bit
Make sure the hole is clean
2. Bit preparation
Transport the bit in box to the drill floor so as to avoid cutter damage
Remove the bit fro
m the box gently and put the bit on the steel deck covered with wood or rubber mat.
Check the bit
Record bit serial number
Check the seal ring inside the nozzle of drill bit
3. Making up the bit
Fit breaker and lock it
Clean and grease the pin
Lower the drill string to the top of pin and engage thread
Locate the bit and breaker on the rotary table and make up to recommended torque.
4. Tripping in the hole
Remove breaker and lower the drilling string to let the bit slowly pass through the rotary table
Trip carefully through BOPs, casing shoes and liner hangers
Trip slowly through ledge and other tight spots
Wash last two joints to bottom with full flow at 50-60 rpm
Once reach the bottom, keep the bit 6-12 inches away from the bottom
Circulate for 5-10 minutes with full flow at 50-60 rpm
5. Reaming
Don't ream undergauge hole
Ream tight spots with full flow to keep cutters cool
2000-4000 pounds WOB and 50-60 rpm
Ream slowly and avoid high torque
6. Bit break in
Lower the drill bit to bottom with full flow at 50-60 rpm
Compare the expected hydraulic parameters with actual ones
Record pump pressure and stroke
Drill the bottom hole with 2000-4000 pounds WOB
Break bit carefully and patiently
Add weight by 2000 pound and increase rotary speed to 100-200 rpm after drilling 3 feet.
7. Drill ahead
Determine the best drilling method by adjusting drilling parameters like WOB and rpm
Perform drilling test regularly to achieve the maximum ROP
PDC torque is close to that of rock bits at equal ROP. Generally, higher speed normally results in higher torque
If there is severe fluctuation in torque or PRM, a higher WOR or increased rpm should be adopted
In harder stratum, rpm should be reduced to maintain stable torque and reduce the temperature of cutter. The typical rpm for harder stratum is 80-110 rpm or lower
8. Making connections
After making connection, lower the drilling string with full flow and keep rotary table at 50-60 rpm
Measure pump stroke and pressure on and off bottom
Increase rpm to previous level and add weight slowly
Don't lower the bit too fast
9. Pulling the drill out of the hole
Slow down through tight spots, casing shoes, liner hangers and BOPs
Attach bit breaker and remove bit in rotary table
Carefully remove the drill bit to protect cutter
Do not place the bit directly on the rotary table
Return the bit to the box after wear grading
